The Matjiesfontein and Sutherland expedition travels into the Karoo for a 4 day (3 night) adventure. The first stop is the delightful village of Matjiesfontein and it’s gem of a hotel, the Lord Milner, steeped in history and splendid in it’s original decor. The surrounding village and areas have lots to offer for the photographer including astrophotography, beautiful landscapes, architecture, history, sunrises and sunsets. Two nights are spent in Matjiesfontein before travelling a further 113 km through the spars and desolate karoo to the star town of Sutherland.
Sutherland also just happens to be the coldest town in South Africa and also the town with the clearest skies all year round and that is why it is the home of the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. This expedition includes a guided visit to the observatory and also a stargazer presentation in the evening explaining just about everything about the stars followed by an astrophotography shoot capturing the Milky Way. In winter the town and surrounding areas are sometimes covered in snow adding a further spectacle to the area.
All travelling takes place in a rented luxury transporter and no serious hiking is done. All the tours are conducted by John who is constantly challenged to get the ultimate landscape astrophotography shot.
The cost of this expedition is R 12500 per person and includes the following;
